Making Waves Again After 36 Years!
After more than three decades away from the ocean, Faye joyfully returned to the water this summer—greeted by smiles, laughter, and an outpouring of support. Her long-awaited swim became a reality thanks to a remarkable team effort between Headstart, John and the crew at Cooks Hill Surf Club and accessible assisted swimming support. It was a safe, joyful, and unforgettable moment!
Headstart support worker Deb was there as Faye stretched out her legs, eager to feel the sand again. “Faye has always been a swimmer,” Deb said. “She loved the water before her brain injury. Now, she adores the hydro pool. The moment she’s in, her joy is contagious. It’s great for her mobility and she enjoys being around other swimmers.” Faye's brother and Headstart Ambassador, soccer star Craig Johnston, was also present when Faye took to the water.
Water therapy has proven incredibly beneficial for people with limited mobility. “There’s something so freeing about floating,” Deb explained. “The warmth helps her joints and increases flexibility. We do gentle exercises and work on straightening her neck. With a float and on her tummy, she kicks up a storm—she’s still got that spark!”
Deb has supported Faye for nearly two years, and their bond is evident. “From day one, we just clicked,” she said. “Faye is non-verbal, so we connect through eye contact, smiles, and laughter. She has this amazing way of speaking with her eyes. I’ve learned to read her subtle nods and see her sense of humour. It’s truly beautiful, and I believe it means a lot to her to feel understood.”
Headstart founder and CEO Sue McHattie reflected, “We met Faye and her family just a year after we started in 1987. Such a strong and resilient family. Her injury was severe, and many see only the challenges. But if you take time to know Faye, you see the glimmer in her eyes for the people she loves, the smiles, and the deep connection she shares with those close to her. Faye was such a strong personality that people often referred to her famous brother Craig as 'Faye's brother' - not the other way around!"
Thanks to a caring support network and the healing power of water, Faye is once again making waves—one joyful splash at a time.
