Volunteers for research into managing challenging interactions of people with ABI

When someone suffers an ABI it is often associated with a range of behavioural changes. This can mean some challenging interactions between individuals and their caregivers, family and even the general public. At Headstart we understand that this isn’t always easy to navigate, and we aim to support you in every way possible.

We are excited to provide you with the opportunity to both assist and benefit from new research being undertaken by The University of New South Wales, Sydney. Referrals and volunteers are being sought for an online treatment trial, The Carer’s Way Ahead: an internet based program specifically tailored for Australian carers managing family members with a traumatic brain injury. It is a step by step program teaching families how to manage challenging behaviour in the home.

It is for adults aged 18+ who:

  • Have a family member with a traumatic brain injury

  • Find the behaviour of their family member challenging (i.e., they exhibit aggression, irritability, apathy etc.)

  • Have access to a computer and reliable internet,

  • Are not currently managed under an active treatment plan for the challenging behaviour (i.e., psychological input and ongoing support for their family member)

The study sessions begin in the second half of 2020 and research continues into 2021, so the UNSW will make every effort to provide a suitable timeframe for you. Once you express interest date options will be provided and your participation discussed in more detail.

We want to encourage you to read more and consider taking part, further information on this page provided by UNSW Sydney:
