Georgeann’s story: the road to independence
My name is George. I have been a consumer with Headstart for more than 7 years. I was living in an old peoples home which was terrible for a young person like me. I had no independence and whilst some of the old people were really nice, many had dementia and that made it hard to me. It was really sad every day. Headstart helped move me out of the nursing home and got me a place to live. In the beginning it was so different and I was a bit scared but all the support workers were great and helped me along in learning how to do all the things I needed to learn again.
After all these years I still need some supports to get through my day but its less and I have learnt so much. I am so much more confident now, and I have made this flat my own home. My support workers also help me get out and do physio, shopping and any other outside activities as I do need to use a wheelchair. My support workers keep supporting me to become as independent as I can be… even if sometimes its hard.
